This was established for the promotion of the sciences,
literature and the arts. Its work is supported by
an annual grant from the government, contributions
from public and private bodies, and its own earnings.
The Institute has legal status; its headquarters
are in Venice, in Palazzo Loredan, which belongs
to the government. The Institute has two departments,
one for mathematics, physics and natural sciences,
the other for moral sciences, literature and the
arts.
The Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti
was originally part of the Reale Istituto Nazionale
founded by Napoleon in Italy in the early part of
the nineteenth century, based on the Institut de
France.
It was re-established under its present title in
1838 by the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I. When the
Veneto was united with the Kingdom of Italy, the
Institute was given national recognition, along
with the academies of the other pre-unification
states.
Its attention has continued to focus on the scientific
and cultural life of the Veneto and Venice. It is
constitued as a scholarly Academy, with members
elected by the current membership and confirmed
by ministerial decree.
The Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti
has made available the catalogue of Biblioteca Luigi
Luzzatti, with almost 16,000 titles (including books
and papers) in Italian and other languages, mainly
on economic, historical, philosophical and religious
subjects. The library's catalogue is searchable
online
