IRES Veneto is a non profit-making organisation
set up in Venice in 1983. It compiles and analyses
economic and sociological information, with particular
reference to the Veneto and the North-East of
Italy.
IRES Veneto is staffed by economists, sociologists,
land scientists, statisticians and computing staff.
For much of its research it also uses outside
assistance, and receives scientific assistance
from other researchers and university lecturers.
Among other activities undertaken on behalf of
the public at large, IRES Veneto provides free
documentation and assistance to anyone at university
or in a research centre in Italy or abroad who
intends to study the features and problems of
the economy of the region: requests, made by school
or university students, or by doctoral and post-doctoral
researchers, are increasing in frequency.
Information services
IRES Veneto has its own statistics laboratory
which can provide a range of information, plus
local data bases, on, businesses and occupations
in the Veneto. The main sources of information
are the economic and demographic censuses drawn
up (1951-91), and the register of businesses,
workers and pay drawn up (1990-95).
Since 1996, Ires Veneto has been building up its
own archive to assist in the provision of this
free public service.
Areas of activity
IRES Veneto has been active to date on a few specific
themes: these include employment economy and training
schemes. Much of the research carried out over
the years of the existence of Ires Veneto has
been published in the journal "Economia e
società regionale", or in the form
of papers and books.
The quarterly journal "Economia e Società
Regionale", edited by Professor Francesco
Indovina, was founded in 1983 to cover changes
in local economies, focusing principally on North-Eastern
Italy, but also dealing with more general subjects
(fiscality and federalism, industrial economic
policy, changes in employment, welfare systems,
technological innovations etc) and thereby involving
national and international opinion on changes
in the economy in contemporary society.
