Canova Hayez Cicognara - Supporting the Bicentenary of the Accademia Galleries
In 2017 the Accademia Galleries asked the International Private Committees for the Safeguarding of Venice for their support for this important show which illustrates a key moment in Venice's cultural history. Following the fall of the Republic in 1797, the Napoleonic Wars and the ceding of the Veneto to Austria, artists under the dynamic leadership of Count Leopoldo Cicognara President of the the newly reformed Accademia, found a new energy in presenting Venice to a post-Napoleonic world. This exhibition tells their story.
Venice in Peril has funded a number of related projects, principally the preparation for the conservation of Antonio Canova's memorial of 1820, in the Basilica of the Frari, as well as a number of projects in the Accademia Galleries. These include the Borsato furniture project of 2015, the Canova bozzetti of 2012 and the Rezzonico lion models of 2013.
