Eighteenth century marionettes

These twenty marionettes - string operated puppets rather than hand puppets - are part of a group bequeathed to the city of Venice and some of them come from one of the few documented aristocratic puppet theatres belonging to the Ca' Grimani in Cannaregio.

The great Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni includes in his memoir an account of a puppet production that he staged as a young man.

The conservation of these marionettes will cost £10,000 and will involve piecing together broken puppets, cleaning, repairing and restoring the bodies, mechanism and clothes.
