The City & Guilds of London Art School - The Venice in Peril Internship

The City & Guilds of London Art School Venice in Peril internship was established in 2010.

In 2010 and 2011 the most outstanding student to graduate from the City & Guilds of London Art School post graduate conservation degree course was offered the opportunity to work alongside a firm of architects in Venice in the autumn following their graduation. The first student to win the internship was Hugi Hicyilmaz.

This initiative was made possible through the generosity of Marina Morrisson Atwater and Mr and Mrs George Blunden. Venice in Peril is very proud to have established this association with The City & Guilds of London Art School.

Since 2012 the internship has moved to the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore as part of a new partnership between the Abbey and the Art School. The project continues to receive the generous support of Marina Morrisson Atwater on behalf of Venice in Peril which also provides technical advice and assistance to interns on the ground. The 2013 intern is Catarina Ramalho, following on from Maxwell Malden in 2012 who cleaned marble elements of the high altar by Girolamo Campagna. The main focus of Catarina’s work this year is a monument to Christ Resurrected and another one to Capitano Pietro Civran, both within the Abbey complex. Catarina developed treatment proposals that were submitted to the Venice Soprintendenza for approval. Work on the conservation of the two monuments has now started. One of the perks of the internship is living amongst the small community of Benedictine monks in the Abbey.
