Lido cemetery: gravestones of two British Residents of Venice
In the 16th century Protestants were buried by the church of Santi Apostoli in Cannaregio. Later, however, their cemetery was transferred to the Lido, near the church of San Nicolò, and there it remained until the present municipal cemetery on the island of San Michele was established under Austrian occupation in the 1840s, when a section was set aside for Protestants. When the Lido airport near San Nicolò was extended in the 1970s, the historic gravestones (French, Swedish and German as well as British) were removed; they included that of Consul Joseph Smith, which was taken to the Anglican church of St George in Dorsoduro. The remaining British gravestones were cleaned and consolidated in 1994-95; these commemorate Elizaeus Burges (British Resident in Venice, 1719-21) and John Murray (British Resident, 1754-65). They have been set up at intervals along the new wall, together with those of other nationalities restored by the French Committee and the German Cultural Institute.
