San Bartolomeo: organ doors by Sebastiano del Piombo
The four large shutters painted by Sebastiano del Piombo in 1507-09 belonged to a now-vanished organ in the 12th-century church which was itself replaced in the 18th century. The German merchant community, which had its fondaco or warehouse nearby, had a chapel in the church enriched with works of art including Albrecht Dürer's Madonna of the Rosary. The German UNESCO Commission has made itself responsible for the repair of the choir stalls and wooden furnishings. Sebastiano's paintings, meanwhile, hang in the Accademia. A generous donation from the Fondation Jean-Barthélémy enabled Venice in Peril to restore them for the memorable 1983 "Genius of Venice" exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. These images of St Sinibaldus, St Louis of Toulouse, St Sebastian and St Bartholomew are among the masterpieces of Venetian painting at the time of Giorgione.
