San Giorgio Maggiore: 15th-century Crucifix
This polychrome wooden crucifix, which was probably carved locally but in a style influenced by Northern expressiveness, can probably be identified as the one given in 1468 to the earlier church which stood on this site. In 1984, thanks to a donation from the Fondation Jean-Barthélémy, the flaking paint surface was consolidated and the whole sculpture strengthened. The result was to emphasise the work's exceptional dramatic and artistic quality, and its importance in the evolution of the imagery of the crucified Christ.
