San Martino: altar retable by Lorenzo Bregno and Tullio Lombardo
The components of this fine Renaissance altar, made in 1484, were moved to San Martino from the Church of San Sepolcro di Gerusalemme following its demolition in 1807 to make way for the enlargement of the Arsenale. The altar was reassembled in the left aisle of the church and adapted for use as a baptismal font. The architectural dossal, probably by Tullio Lombardo, houses statues of Saints Peter and John the Baptist attributed to Lorenzo Bregno, as are the four kneeling angels supporting the table. The angels, which were rapidly crumbling away, were removed from the church after the ßood of 1966 and were replaced after being impregnated with resin by the vacuum technique. The work of cleaning and consolidation in 1991-92 was funded jointly by Venice in Peril and the Australian, Swedish and Philadelphia Committees for Venice.
