The
church of San Vidal, or Vitale, was rebuilt
around 1700, its neo-classical façade
being the work of Andrea Tirali. The Piazzetta
canvas was painted c.1727-30 as part of
a group of altarpieces commissioned from
several artists, including Sebastiano Ricci.
It is a striking example of the chiaroscuro
style which distinguishes Piazzetta's work
from that of his younger contemporary G
B Tiepolo. The restoration was made possible
by a generous donation from the Charlotte
Bonham Carter Charitable Trust and was completed
in time for the painting's inclusion in
the "Glory of Venice" exhibition
at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in
1994. The painting currently hangs in the
church of San Samuele.
