The
church dedicated to Santi Gervasio e Protasio,
contracted by the Venetians to San Trovaso,
was rebuilt in Palladian style by an unknown
architect in about 1585. It was reroofed
in 1987 with a contribution from Venice
in Peril. This led to other repair projects,
including the vaulting (which was paid for
by the Magistrato alle Acque) in the course
of which it became possible to reopen the
Diocletian window over the high altar, bricked
up since the wartime bombing of the docks
nearby. San Trovaso serves as the University
church of Venice and has recently benefited,
like the Madonna dell'Orto and ten other
Venetian churches, from a government scheme
ensuring longer opening hours and better
lighting.
