Santa Maria della Visitazione

Santa Maria della Visitazione, ceiling and cupola paintings (1993-94)

Restoration of the painted and gilded ceiling of this Renaissance church was funded in 1970 by the Philadelphia Committee and the International Fund for Monuments. Subsequent dispute over ownership of the building and consequent lack of maintenance, particularly of the roof, led to renewed deterioration of the ceiling. In 1993, following settlement of the dispute and repair of the roof, Venice in Peril agreed to fund a new restoration of the ceiling, with its 58 roundel panel paintings by the 15th-century Umbrian artist Pier Paolo Agabiti, depicting patriarchs, prophets, apostles and martyrs. Venice in Peril then joined forces with the Australian Committee to complete further work, including the frescoed Evangelists in the pendentives of the cupola.
