60 Years On
London, Autumn 2026. Venice in Peril Fund is launching the Acqua Granda Appeal, marking the 60th anniversary of the devastating floods of November 1966 in Venice.
Known locally to Venetians as the acqua granda, literally the ‘big water’, the disaster prompted an extraordinary international effort to protect the city’s art, architecture and unique contribution to our civilisation, out of which Venice in Peril Fund was born.
Today, 60 years on, we remain committed to our founding mission to safeguard Venice.
Our Priorities
The Acqua Granda Appeal appeal seeks to address the continued threats from the effects of rising sea levels, land subsidence and mass tourism. All funds raised will support three interconnected priorities:
i) conserve works of art and architecture at risk;
ii) provide opportunities for the next generation of scholars and craftspeople;
iii) support responses to environmental challenges.
