Venice in Peril

For over 40 years, the Venice in Peril Fund has disbursed millions of pounds for the restoration of Venetian monuments, buildings and works of art.

Manuscript Choir Books from Basilica San Marco, Archivio Patriarcale

A series of seven manuscript choir books with mass settings from the 16th-18th centuries, from the Cappella Ducale of San Marco. Conserved 2016, now in the Archivio Patriarcale.

Stone sculpture of a Winged Figure with Elephant

In the third courtyard of the Procuratie Nuove, Piazza San Marco, facing a staircase leading to the apartments of the ex-Palazzo Reale, an allegorical stone sculpture of a winged female figure with a small elephant can be seen.

Palladio Wing Rooms, Gallerie dell’Accademia

In support of the major state-funded reorganisation of the Accademia Galleries, a project to fund the opening up of the Palladio Wing 7 ground floor rooms displaying the work of Canova and his contemporaries.

PROJECT
Protestant Cemetery, Island of San Michele

Many celebrated figures are buried in the the Protestant Cemetery on the island of San Michele including the founder of Venice in Peril, Sir Ashley Clarke. Venice in Peril supported the survey in 1995 and the establishment in 2014 of an international Association (ARECSM) to carry conservation maintenance plans forward.

Plaster models of ‘Rezzonico’ lions, Antonio Canova, Gallerie dell’Accademia

Antonio Canova modelled these lions on his tomb for the Venetian Pope Clement XII. Used as drawing models by students from 1840 they have now been restored.

Armstrong Mitchell Crane, Arsenale

This massive hydraulic crane dominates the skyline of the Arsenale. Engineered by Sir William Armstrong and built on Tyneside in 1884, it was acquired by the Kingdom of Italy as it built a new fleet for its navy.
