GeM Award - conservation experience in the UK for Italian architecture graduates

About the project

The GeM Award was set up by Peregrine Bryant Architecture & Conservation in memory of Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi, two young Italian architects who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower Fire in 2017.

The annual award was established for a graduate from IUAV, their university in Venice, and one of the oldest architecture schools in Italy, to commemorate both Gloria and Marco’s names and talents.

The GeM Award provides a scholarship for a selected graduate to come to the UK for 3 months to follow a programme that explores and contrasts the Italian and UK approaches to conservation architecture and building.

So far there have been two GeM scholars, Giulia Pannocchia in 2018 and Federica Martinelli in 2019.

The GeM scholar follows a programme that can be adapted to accommodate particular interests.  At its core is attendance on the popular SPAB Repair of Old Buildings Course, but it also includes time spent shadowing practitioners working on live projects with organisations including the Landmark Trust, the National Trust, Historic England and others.

The GeM Award also aims to maintain close links with the local Grenfell community programmes.
